Tata Institute of Social Sciences Ranks 10th worldwide 

Mumbai University has fared poorly in yet another ranking of Indian institutes, conducted by Stanford University and, which focuses on their productivity in social science research. It is placed at 33 among 36 institutes in the category of “sociology, demography and family studies”.

Mumbai University has fared poorly in yet another ranking of Indian institutes, conducted by Stanford University and, which focuses on their productivity in social science research. It is placed at 33 among 36 institutes in the category of “sociology, demography and family studies”.

In the same category, International Institute of Population Sciences (IIPS) from Mumbai ranks sixth, while Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) is at number 10 and IIT Bombay is in the 14th position. Delhi University tops this category, followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University.

The rankings in four categories have been based on variables like the number of peer reviewed journal articles produced by an institution and the number of citations these articles received. The data used for the rankings have been derived from “Thomson’s ISI web of knowledge”.

In the economics research category again, Mumbai University is ranked 32, while Delhi University and Calcutta University are way ahead at number seven and 10 respectively.

For instance, at the QS Asian university rankings, Mumbai University was placed at 96 in 2010, 145 in 2011, between 151-160 in 2012 and 140 in 2013.

In the psychology section, which is again topped by Delhi University, the Stanford University ranking has three institutes from Mumbai — IIT Bombay (21), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR, 25) and IIPS (28).

While University of Allahabad (second), Banaras Hindu University (four), Calcutta University (nine), Aligarh Muslim University (11), Jawaharlal Nehru University (13) and University of Pune (19) among others feature in the psychology category, Mumbai University does not find a place among the 34 institutes ranked in this section.

Similarly, in the category of business and management research, Mumbai University does not find a place among the 33 institutes assessed. In the top 10, only one insitute — Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research — is at number nine. While IIT Bombay is positioned at 13th, TIFR and TISS are ranked 31 and 33 respectively.

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) is a social sciences institute with its main campus based in Mumbai, India. Since its establishment in 1936, it has been one of the premier institutes in India in social sciences, human development, public policy and economics.[1] The institute is a part of an elite group of research and higher learning institutes with early support from the Tata Trusts in India. Other institutes in this group include Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc) and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR).[2]

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences was ranked in top Indian universities, colleges and institutes in Social, Demography and Economics research by a Stanford University study.[3] The master's degree programme in Human Resource Management and Labour Relations (erstwhile Personnel Management and Industrial Relations) offered at the TISS Mumbai campus is one of the most prestigious programs in the field of HR in India.
