Any person who wishes to pursue education or work opportunities in English speaking countries can apply for IELTS. There is no minimum IELTS eligibility criterion. Most universities accept the Academic version of IELTS for admission to their various programmes. Organisations which are not educational in nature may accept the IELTS general test.

 

IELTS Test is conducted in two versions - IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. Both versions of the test are made up of four parts – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. IELTS test is designed to reflect real life use of English — at study, at work, and at play and results are graded on a unique IELTS 9-band scale.

A specific version of IELTS can be selected by the candidates depending on the institution or organization they wish to enter in an English-speaking country.

 

While everybody has to take the same listening and speaking components, it is the reading and writing components that differ for the two versions - IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training.  The total duration for the test is 2 hours 45 minutes. Listening, reading and writing tests are done in one sitting while speaking test may be on the same day or within 7 days before or after the test.

 

The IELTS speaking test is conducted as a one-on-one test to assess candidates’ English communication skills. This means that the candidates are put through a real-life conversation with a real person to get their English conversation skills tested.

IELTS Test Application is available throughout the year. Depending on the test centre, it is held for a maximum of four times a month. The IELTS test can be re-taken for an unlimited number of times after registering separately for each test. The IELTS test registration fee is over £150. However, the IELTS test registration fee may vary according to the country you are appearing from. The IELTS registration fee also depends on the format and type of exam you are planning to take. In some countries like USA, Canada etc. only the paper based test is available.

 

IELTS is offered up to four times a month in more than 140 countries. Tests are usually conducted on Saturdays or Thursdays. Specific IELTS test dates at different locations is available on the official website. The annual IELTS dates are out. Students interested in appearing for IELTS can register for the given IELTS test date.

 

IELTS accepting institutes and organisations

 

IELTS scores are accepted by over 9000 organisations and institutions across the globe. It might be asked by educations institutions, employers, governments and so on. However, different bodies might require different IELTS score. So, while universities ask for IELTS Academic scores, government bodies might ask for IELTS general training score.

Candidates are given a IELTS score from 1 to 9 for each part of the test – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The average produces overall band score.

 

IELTS test takers will receive their Test Report Form within 13 days of the test date. Official IELTS test centres can send Test Report Forms directly to your organisation or institution (provided it has been nominated), either by mail or as an electronic download. IELTS Scores are valid for two years. However, the acceptance of the IELTS score depends on the selection procedure of the institute the candidate is applying to. One can apply for an inquiry on results procedure within 6-weeks of the IELTS test date. The inquiry fee is fully refunded if band score changes
